“Otherness”

Almost a month ago, Thandie Newton gave an incredible TED talk about “otherness”, growing up as a sort of outsider. This is something I have experienced/discussed/fought against most of my life, as an immigrant who once moved to a mostly white neighborhood, and then went to a largely white liberal arts college. The concepts of self-awareness to overcome the outside influence of feeling out of place is not revolutionary, but valuable to share.

As far as TED talks go, this one got a lot of flak for not being too scientific. At the same time, a lot of supporters have spoken out about teenage angst and not belonging are worthy TED talk concepts, as they have shaped a lot of “adults” today. I would have to agree with the latter sentiment.
